On February 13, the team led by ZHONG Nanshan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, isolated live coronavirus from feces, suggesting the possibility of fecal-oral transmission. Dr. Hou Feng, chairman of CWEG under the SDIC, said that the municipal WWTP is the last line of defense to isolate the virus, so the WWTP should concern about not only safe production and stable and standard water productivity, but also epidemic control and staff safety.
“Since the outbreak of COVID-19, we have held many special meetings on engineering technology, construction and management, operation and other work, formulated emergency management and technical solutions, ensured the maximum efficiency of disinfection process of WWTP, prevented and controlled virus risks, thus ensured the continuous and stable operation of wastewater treatment projects in 19 provinces and cities in China, including Ezhou.” Hou Feng said.
Hou Feng believes that the public environmental health management after the COVID-19 will rise to a new height, and the industrial value of underground WWTP will be further taken seriously at the same time. Compared with the treatment process of traditional aboveground WWTP which fully exposes to the natural environment, the underground WWTP not only solves the not-in-my-back-yard problem, places the treatment process underground, blocks the spread of virus, and is conducive to disinfection management, but also reduces the exposure of personnel in the plant with the help of intelligent IOT remote monitoring. In addition, the land space saved above the ground can be used as a green comprehensive development to achieve environmental friendliness and better resource utilization.
In January of this year, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment issued the National Catalogue of Advanced Pollution Control Technologies (for the Field of Water Pollution Control) for 2019 (Announcement No. 2 of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment in 2020) (the “Catalogue”), and the “ecological underground WWTP intensive construction and resource utilization technology” was listed therein as the only underground technology.
Hou Feng said that with the promotion and support of the government, professional forces can participate in the formulation of national standards and the promotion of advanced technology in the industry, which is of great significance for the standardized development of underground WWTPs, and it also can be seen that underground WWTPs will play a more significant role in the field of public health in the future.
