WWTP is the standard configuration of municipal development. It is related to the safety and stability of people's livelihood, and became the last line of defense for the virus during the COVID-19 period. Compared with the traditional WWTPs, underground WWTP is an innovation mode of WWTP and has advantages in the aspects of safe production, environmental friendliness and intelligent management.
Since January 1, 2020, the Technical Guideline for Underground Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant, the first national standard for underground WWTP, has been officially implemented. It was jointly developed by leading enterprises, colleges/universities, design institutes and other professional forces under the leadership of CWEG, thus represents the highest level of research and technical practice in the underground WWTP industry in China.
Dr. Hou Feng, the first author of the Guideline and chairman of CWEG, said that since its being approved for compiling in 2017, the Guideline has gone through more than 20 domestic and international investigations and more than 10 thematic discussions, gathering the wisdom and consensus of the industry. CWEG was entrusted to take the lead in formulating the guideline, which represents the recognition and support of national level for specialized enterprises to lead scientific and technological innovation.
In recent years, the underground WWTP is in rapid development in China. Compared with the traditional aboveground WWTP, the underground WWTP has the advantages of intensive use of land, environmental friendliness and better resource utilization, and can effectively solve the not-in-my-back-yard problem, release the ground space and achieve good resource utilization. However, as a new form of WWTP, there has been no targeted technical specification and guideline for underground plants in China. In order to promote the standardized development of underground municipal WWTP, the government actively organizes professional forces including leading enterprises, colleges and universities and design institutes in the industry to participate in the formulation of national standards and the promotion of advanced technology in the industry.
Fan Yuansheng, chairman of the CAEPI, said that the Guideline specifies the technical requirements for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of underground municipal WWTPs, fills in the blank of standards in this field in China, and will play a positive role in guiding the standardized development of market in this field.
The smooth implementation of the first guidelines for WWTP also marks that the underground WWTP has stepped into an era of normalized and standardized development.
In January 2020, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment issued the National Catalogue of Advanced Pollution Control Technologies (for the Field of Water Pollution Control) for 2019, and two technical achievements of CWEG were listed therein. One of them, the “ecological underground WWTP intensive construction and resource utilization technology”, as the only underground technology selected in the industry, was recognized and recommended by the national level.
It is learned that the fifth generation of underground WWTP developed by the CWEG with independent intellectual property rights “adopts the combination mode to build underground WWTP, realize wastewater treatment and resource recovery, and integrate to build an ecological complex”. At present, the technology has been successfully applied in national demonstration projects of Guiyang Qingshan Underground WWTP, Shanghai Jiading Underground WWTP, etc. of CWEG.
Another technology listed in the Catalogue, i.e. “biofilm enhanced denitrification multi-level AO process”, is the innovative achievement of the academician team led by PENG Yongzhen from the academician expert workstation of CWEG, focusing on the major demand for deep denitrification of municipal wastewater. This achievement, based on the practice of the national demonstration project of Beijing Bishui Underground WWTP of CWEG, breaks through a series of major engineering problems in the application of new technologies and will be applied and promoted in multiple projects in the future, which can continuously bring good social, economic and environmental benefits.
According to the data of Frost & Sullivan, a market research institution, CWEG is the technical leader of underground WWTP, the scale of underground WWTPs it operates ranks first in China and even in the world, and it has 15 national demonstration projects, ranking first in the industry.
At present, CWEG’s high-quality underground WWTP with independent intellectual property rights has developed to the fifth generation, and has been applied in a number of major scientific projects, of the NDRC, or under the National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (i.e. 863 Program), or under the Major Science and Technology Program for Water Pollution Control and Treatment, etc. With in-depth cooperation with Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University, RWTH Aachen University and other well-known research institutes at home and abroad, it serves the R&D and practice of innovative technologies in the field of water environment.
